Banking
The main banks in Hong Kong are The HSBC (Hong Kong and Shanghai
Banking Corporation) its subsidiary, the Hang Seng Bank
and
Standard Chartered Bank. There are also US banks such as
Citibank, Chase and Bank of America etc. It is easy to open
an account
and every bank will help you with this. There are many main
branches, all located in Central, just avoid lunch times
and
Friday afternoons. Bank opening hours are generally from
9.30am to 4.30pm
If you are a US citizen opening an account with an American
affiliated bank you will have to provide your social security
number along with your US passport. Interest income is reported
by the bank to the Internal Revenue Service.
Currency
The Hong Kong dollar is ‘pegged’ i.e. it is tied
to the US dollar, so fluctuation is low. Generally the exchange
rate is HK$7.75 to the US$1. Check the daily paper for precise
exchange rates.
Postal Services
The main General Post Office is in front of Jardine House
in Central, but there are numerous branches across Hong Kong
. The postal
service is efficient, with most local mail delivered the
next day. Postage is $1.40 for letters and postcards.
The Post Office offers “Speedpost” and express
services, registered and insured mail services and bulk
mail
postings. You can also pay bills here including PCCW, gas,
water, electric and rates.
